Hi there! I am Taufik Hidayah. I am an HU SPRING Next-Generation Research Fellow and PhD candidate in International Peace and Coexistence at Hiroshima University, where my research examines the colonial aesthetics and ideology of Japanese propaganda film in occupied Indonesia, 1942–1945. I was also a visiting researcher at the Centre for the Arts in Society (LUCAS), Leiden University, and was an affiliated researcher at the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision (Beeld en Geluid). Previously, I studied at Diponegoro University (BA in History) and Hiroshima University (Master of International Cooperation).

My forthcoming article, “Peeling Back the Layers of Japanese Propaganda Film: A Multimodal Analysis of Djawa Baharoe Newsreel” (Asian Journal of Arts and Culture, 2026), examines the Indonesian-language newsreel Djawa Baharoe, the first Japanese propaganda newsreel released for occupied Indonesia, as a multimodal ideological technology. Drawing on Bateman and Schmidt's framework for multimodal film analysis alongside Director Tokichi Ishimoto's production notes, I dissect how narrative voice, sound, and visual grammar worked together to make the ideology of the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere feel natural to Indonesian audiences.

Outside academia, I work across documentary, essay video, music video production, and portraiture.
